Instructions

Play by jumping one peg over another to remove all pegs but one. First, touch the peg you want to move. You will see that peg selected. You will also see a highlight on the empty holes where that peg can move. Touch one of the highlighted holes. The peg will move to that hole and the peg that was jumped will be removed. Continue until you can no longer jump over any pegs. If you have only one peg left, you're a genius. Otherwise, keep trying.

Touch the left and right arrows to change boards for a more challenging game.

Instructions

Tesserae is the game of color tiles. Play by jumping one color over another to remove tiles from the board. Try to remove all but one tile. Tesserae is simple to learn, but a challenge to master. The instructions will teach you the basic concepts of adding and subtracting colors, but if you feel overwhelmed, just start playing and come back to the instructions later.

There are seven different color tiles. Three of the tiles are primary colors:

Red Yellow Blue

Red, Yellow and Blue

These tiles can jump, or flip, over any primary tile, which is then removed from the board.

Three tiles are secondary colors (two primary colors combined):

Green Orange Purple

Green, Orange and Purple

When a primary tile flips over a secondary tile, its color is removed, or lifted off, from the secondary tile.

Red Over Purple

When a primary color tile lands on another primary color tile, the colors are combined into a secondary color tile.

Primary Color Addition

Combining all three primary colors yields a gray tile.

Making Gray

To remove a secondary color tile, lift off the composing primary colors. Flipping a secondary tile over itself or a gray tile will remove both colors at once.

Green Over Gray

Hint: To remove a secondary tile from a corner, bring or build the same color tile next to that tile. Then jump the tile over itself.

Orange Over Orange

Except for primary tiles, which can flip over any tile:

• A tile can only flip over a tile that DOES contain its colors

• A tile can land itself or on a tile that does NOT contain its colors

For example, green can flip over green or gray, but not over orange or purple. That's because orange and purple both contain red, but green contains only blue and yellow; not red.

Hint: The shapes on each primary tile combine to make it easier to add and subtract colors. For example, a red circle and a blue square combine to produce a purple square inside a circle.

Increase the difficulty of any board by starting with more secondary tiles:

• Novice has only primary tiles

• Apprentice has both primary tiles and secondary tiles

• Master has more secondary tiles and some gray tiles

Start as Novice and work up 18 levels (3 layouts and 6 board shapes).

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: I always end up with tiles far apart from each other.

Answer: Start from the corners and sides and work towards the center of the board. If tiles get a few squares away, jump towards those tiles to rescue them.

Question: There's no way to jump over a secondary tiles that's in a corner.

Answer: A secondary tile can jump over itself or a gray tile. Try to build an identical tile next to it, so that the tile can jump out of the corner.
